Digital Radio Australia

Digital Radio has finally launched in Australia’s major Capital Cities.  After many years of planning and technical trials, the dabplus or DAB+ system was chosen for it’s ability to jam a whole lot more stations into the infrastructure available – albeit at a reduced audio quality.  Hopefully you won’t be able to notice this audio degradation however, and the federal government may prove a savior for the service in a few years when more RF spectrum is freed up (by the analogue TV switchoff which will free up the TV channels for Digital Radio and Mobile Broadband use), which will allow for the audio quality to be improved.  In the meantime – enjoy the site and our many news articles and related video’s we have collected about Digital Radio in Australia.

I live in Surry Hills, near the centre of Sydney. I find the promise of digital radio a lie. I’ve been barely able to pick up a signal at my former Surry Hills home, and it would drop in and out, and I’d only get any signal at all if I put my Oxx digital classic radio in the window and fiddle with the aerial position for an hour. Now I’ve moved to a new place a block away from my former house and I can’t get any reception at all any where in the house. Considering I live in the most inner city of Sydney you’d think we’d have digital reception, given the population density, but we still have nothing worthwhile, which is quite astounding since it was launched on 15 June 2009 an it’s now October 2012 – i.e. there has been 3 years to get it working and nothing has been done. I think there should be more truth about how poor the coverage is, so people don’t waste their money on expensive gadgets they can’t use.

My Pure One Mi radio is good, it picks up reception good even in the car. Novanation, Edge, 3AW & SEN are all good. All of ABC & SBS digital stations are shocking their reception is very poor. The more stations ABC have the less quality & reception it is.

I live in Narre Warren South & reception is ok but if your driving on the Monash fwy pass Heatherton rd to Pakenham reception keeps dropping out. This needs to be fixed by either boosting wattage at Mt Dandenong or install repeaters around area’s that are having reception drop outs.

Digital Radio is here to stay so they need to boost transmission for those people living 25km/h or more from the city of Melbourne to enjoy DAB+

I have converted all my household radios in Melbourne to digital and have found it to be excellent. My initial problems were caused with particular brands being poor quality, not digital reception itself. I am now about to move to Hobart and everything I have bought will be useless. Does anyone know the rollout timetable for Tasmania and in particular Hobart being the capital city?

I love Digital. We all have to get with the times. Sure, it must get frustrating for the elderly who don’t like change, but love their T.V. & radio, but at the end of the day, they will enjoy the future more….

It is only logical that digital radios will take over, as the digital age will for ever increase in size – stature and functionality. do think that not only Toyota but other car manufacturers will follow very soon. The advantages of digital over analogue is just too big and the capacity of stations to increase channels will also increase. Long live digital!

  13. Chris says:

It’s about time a car manufacturer has built a car sterio capable of digital radio. Toyota can be the proud first to have done this it will be released in the new aurion, kluger and landcruiser. I’d like to think that it will be made an option for the other vehicles they produce also. But what good new hopefully other car company’s will follow suit.

Taken one DAB+ radio back to retailer as the reception was rubbish. We’re near the centre of Perth and all other signals are good – mobile, TV, wireless broadband. Retailer said yes, they couldn’t get DAB to work in the store but outside it was OK (and see post #65 about this too)!!! I think the problem was a bad design from what I had thought to be a reputable company (TDK). Philips replacement model at least works. But I am now wondering what the point of buying DAB+ was. Quality is not as good as FM and there is no difference between usability of FM and DAB. Oh, and it is more expensive. Also aerial has to be positioned carefully to pick up signal, otherwise, as #69 says, signal fades. FM is better able to cope with poor signal strength than DAB and gives better quality and I think longer battery life. Having played around a bit with it I am at a loss to know why on Earth anyone is pushing this retrograde technology. Anyone any ideas?

Don’t get a DAB radio if you want to take it to the footy.
The delay, compared with AM radio, is terrible. A goal is scored and the radio tells you 4-5 seconds later. Might not seem like a long time but in real time, it’s too long a delay. Is there anything that can be done ?
