Digital Radio Australia
Digital Radio has finally launched in Australia’s major Capital Cities. After many years of planning and technical trials, the dabplus or DAB+ system was chosen for it’s ability to jam a whole lot more stations into the infrastructure available – albeit at a reduced audio quality. Hopefully you won’t be able to notice this audio degradation however, and the federal government may prove a savior for the service in a few years when more RF spectrum is freed up (by the analogue TV switchoff which will free up the TV channels for Digital Radio and Mobile Broadband use), which will allow for the audio quality to be improved. In the meantime – enjoy the site and our many news articles and related video’s we have collected about Digital Radio in Australia.
I’m in Jewells / Newcastle area & have to listen Via Wifi on Phone for Sydney channels.. Had to sell Digital Radio, absolutely bloody useless… Otherwise I can’t get anything but 2hd Newcastle.
DAB Is dead in the water. Northern beaches Sydney. Zero reception. Returned the radio – never again. Even if I could get it too work at home ( this was a gift for my sister – mona vale) I still took it back – so maybe it might work – but if I move areas it’s gonna be like… A gamble that it might or might not work – nah. Too dodgy for the price of these units. Like the guy said said, stick to AM/fm band.
I live on the Morn Pen in Vic and our digital radio reception is terrible. I have a very good quality unit and it cuts in and out constantly. Awful awful awful and a complete waste of money.
I have a OXX Digital Classic and the LED has gone blank. It appears OXX have left Australia,so does anyone know who can repair it.I live in Brisbane but will post if necessary.I’ve had a quick look and no loose wires.
Graham, RICHMOND???? hard reception??? are you joking? It seems that all the gripes on this site are genuine and then you get a couple of digital radio propaganda fags… you and Scott 🙂 continue working at your regional Big W and K-Mart stores selling customers radios that they cannot use in their homes for 10 times the price of a radio they can use, which WILL sound better (good ol’ FM)
I work in a Jaycar store in a regional location and we stopped selling DAB as soon as we found out it didn’t work anywhere outside the capitol city! The major retailers continue to sell it though… great for us cause we set all our customers straight on this sham the government calls the future…
I am in the Brisbane north side area and i cannot find a digital radio channel that works. every one of them just keep cutting in and out what a joke. I am taking my digital radio back and getting my money back.
Been going 3 years and still only in the area around 7 capital cities, seeing Hobart can’t even get a guernsey looks like fat chance for the rest of us…6461…
The reception around Dickson is pathetic. I get periods where it is good but by and large it is plagued by drop outs which today have rendered my digital radio unusable. It has a long way to go to be a viable alternative to conventional radios. Also all the new radios need an extended antenna which you have to fiddle with and move to different areas to get the best reception, the signal strength is really appalling.
When will we get digital radio in Tasmania? We are missing out on a lot of good stuff which is only on digital and we are getting frustrated!
Interested in oz horse racing live radio via internet service, so can this dab radio thing work…on smartphone…

Hi, just bought a new Land-Rover and the Audio system is programmed with DAB for the UK but during discussion with Land Rover Australia to get it working in Australia they are telling me that there are not enough aerials broadcasting the signal for it to work while driving. Is this true or are they just trying to avoid activating it for their cars here in Australasia?
When will we be able to get digital radio reception in Gippsland and the Latrobe Valley?
Don’t bother buying a digital radio if you live in Kingsley/Woodvale in Western Australia. The DAB reception is very poor and sound is very low. Would not be good for anyone with hearing problems – you have to stand right next to it. Bought a good brand (SONY) but have been very disappointed with it. Fade outs are particularly annoying when listening to music.
can I get reception in 5km radius of port macquarie
